Grommet tape

topic posted Tue, January 30, 2007 - 1:34 PM by  offlineMary
I was so proud of myself...I finally made my first corset bra but I am sorely disappointed in the woosy grommet tape they have at JoAnn's here in Phoenix. The tape itself is not very wide hindering sewing it to anything. After I got it sewn inplace the grommets pulled out the first time I tried it on.
So where can I find some decent grommet tape online? (Or here in Phoenix as I am an addict of instant gratification!!!)
Please help.

Gritting my teeth in frustration.

I spoke (or wrote) before researching past topics and found this was discussed before but the only place mentioned...lucysfabrics.com is sold out. It did however look like the type that would hold up.

      Mary -
Laura from Lucy's Fabrics will order the leather/pvc grommet tape if you just go to the website and send her an email. Tell her Ariellah sent you...heh.(but seriously, tell her Ariellah sent you) She has been toying with the idea of doing another shipment, but doesn't know if it would be worth it...
      just an fyi...

Did you try ebay? I got some great grommet tape from someone on ebay...sorry I can't remember her name...she had a black cat in her logo??? She even threw in a sample of pleather grommet tape, long enough for a necklace or headband.

I found some leather grommet tape at Walmart. It's prepackaged but at the store here it's still over at the ribbon rack. It's Wright's Creative Classics and is 1/2" - 6 feet for $3.97.

Danger Danger Will Robinson. The pleather tape from Wal-Mart is CRAP! Use it for decoration only and don't use it for the edges of any belts/bras/anything you want to tie to yourself. What a mess.

Good info, thanks! Mine's still wrapped in the plastic it came in, so I'll pass on the word.

I believe Wright's has changed the material they use for the tape...the stuff I used when I first started making belts was pretty damn sturdy...in fact, many of those early pieces are still kicking it hard with their owners..and then I thought I got a bad batch of it, b/c the tears were so quick and easy, and then I got more and it was fine (perhaps it was just older)...and realizing now what's been happening in the plastic industry with the cost of gasoline, I think they're cutting corners somewhere in the ingredients. About 2-3 years ago, I switched over to a double-thick vinyl that has a fabric base underneath. I don't have a brand name for it and I get it from a wholesale-only source---but I have seen it in the LA garment district and occasionally on ebay and trim sites.

Well I did a little more research and found some extremely sturdy "eyelet" tape at a corset supply company. I never thought to look up eyelet until I looked at Lucy's fabric website. It is a bit expensive but I want my stuff to last a long time. It was around $13.50 a yard. They don't have leather or plastic though so I will keep searching for that. However I got it last week and started working with it and it is nice. It has a larger strip for sewing into place which was a problem with the Wright's. I missed my stitch in a few places on the machine and had to restitch.

            check it out: store.corsetmaking.com/Mercha...ant.mvc
            The store is Delicious LLC

I just got my package from Lucy's website, and I must say there is a HUGE difference between the wright's trim from sprawlmart, and the stuff I just got. She even gave me a freebie of black stretch lace!!

Tempest, what do you think of the eye tape Laura has? (I'd paste a link but I can't get it to work from this computer.)

When I saw it I just thought it'd be pretty, but I don't want a repeat of the grommet tape failure.

I couldn't either, but it looks like the eye tape in this picture:

The base fabric for the belt would have to be pretty stiff and self-supporting, and I'd recommend making a 5 or 6 panel belt (or more!) to cut down on the stress. This sort of detailing is good for accents, tops, and non-supporting places...Though, you could do two layers of it, different color lacing, interior/exterior...sort of vagina dentata ;)

Hmmmm. Would heavy duty interfacing work with something thinner? I'm already using denim as the "back" side, and I have a weakness for all the pretty brocades at JoAnn's.

5 panel is actually what seems to fit the best, so that's not a problem.

I like the 2 layered idea a lot! (Filing that one away for later;) But I gotta master one first.;)

Okay... I have a question for everyone who has already made a belt... I'd ask the GothMutha, but she's busy... ya know.

Due to some real genius planning on my part (read poor), I'm in a funky place with grommet tape. I can't get the heavy stuff in time for a show on June 8 (7 days from today).

This leaves me with little choice but to use the not so great kind from Wrights. SO.....

The reality is.. I only need it to make it through one show, then... I can change it for proper grommet tape later. The extra work of changing the tape doesn't bother me..

Do I, put it onto the surface of the belt, sew down one side and then in between each grommet? or... should I try to find a better alternative?

I'd try to find something better if I could..the moment I pushed down on my belt to adjust the fit it stretched the pleather...I'd hate to think what would happen while dancing. However, if you can't find it, then have someone else help you lace up, and keep it a bit loose.

                  Thanks Heather!

Blessedly, I have a couple people who are good at lacing, and I planned on pre-lacing the panels and then adjusting them gently once on. I'll probably put a hidden safety pin on each panel just in case, to get through the show. Then, when it's over.. replace the tape with the good stuffs.

does anyone punch their own grommets anymore? I know its time consuming but it would add durability and value to your pieces! and its not hard at all!

You can punch your own with this pattern... which is nice.. but I don't have the right stuff.

sorry lady, I'm very MIA...in fact, it's past midnight somewhere in the middle of Illinois...and several hundred emails...

but you could take some mini-washers, and use some trim and handsew those buggers on there in a line....sort of like eyelets...

if you could only see the matching descriptive hand gestures...

The belts I've made from Tempest's pattern have all been hand punched. Yes it is time consuming and you do have to be very, very careful but they work out a shite load cheaper than the tape. Here it costs NZ$20 per metre and is very narrow. I've had no problems with the hand punched grommets/eyelets and have made about 8 belts in total so far.

Someone should have warned me they were addictive! They are fabulous for troupe costuming!

I do. All my grommets are put in place by me... Never even thought of that one could by them on tape til I saw the subjects here on tribe.

Definitely don't waste time and money on the cheapy grommet tape available at the fabric store if you intend to use the grommets for more than decoration. If you wish the grommets to be functional and bear any weight (and if you intend to lace two pieces of fabric together at all, you do), you will need a better option.

Of course, I not only punch and set my own grommets (not with the puny punch/setter tool and crappy grommets in the kit sold in the notions department at the fabric store, but with the heavy-duty industrial style puncher/setter (made of iron and designed to be mounted on a worktable, available for $60) and the 2-piece grommets I buy from Lacis in Berkeley (available online (www.lacis.com) and via mail-order (3163 Adeline Street, Berkeley CA 94703, USA FAX: (510) 843-5018 PHONE: 510-843-7178 Mon-Fri 9:30AM - 5:30 pm PST) if you live outside of the SF Bay Area)), I couch them, as well (thanks to over a decade-and-a-half of costuming for Faire). I also re-enforce the area I am punching by sandwiching a layer of canvas between the different layers of fabric, which gives the grommets plenty of fabric to grip onto so that the grommets are permanently secured, and reduces the likelihood that they will tear out.

Tempest mentioned sewing miniature washers onto the fabric. This is the approach you would use if you could not find appropriate grommets or tape, and actually is similar to how eyelets for lacing were created before the use of grommets. To try this, place a single washer over the spot through which you want the lacing to go, or place a washer on either side of the fabric over that spot (more secure). Couch over the washer by bringing a needle loaded with embroidery floss (or crochet thread of a simliar weight) up through the hole in the center of the washer, then down through the fabric again just past the edge of the washer. Eventually, when the metal of the washer has been completely covered by the thread you are using, use an awl (or similarly-pointed tool, such as a knitting needle) to poke the fabric in the center of the washer out, leaving a neat hole for lacing. If your fabric is of a particularly loose weave, you may wish to dab the thread with Fray-Chek, or similar product, to re-enforce the point of the garment that bears the greatest friction and keep it from fraying after the lacing rubs up against it for awhile.

Barring that kind of painstaking handwork, I would suggest you look for grommet tape made from twill or similar materials. Lacis has two types in its online catalogue: one with ("heavy-duty eyelet tape"--$7.50/yard) and one without ("lacing tape"--$2.00/yard) casings on either side for boning. Both are available in both white and black. Of course, these items may be available from other sources and for a different price (such as other stores and online venues devoted to professional costume construction and corsetry), but Lacis was local to me when I began costuming and currently has free shipping (after their nominal handling fee of $4.50).
